Book Description
for The House Without Lights by Reem Faruqi and Nadia Alam
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
“In a windy, wintry neighborhood stood one house without lights.” House has watched its neighbors shine, from Diwali lamps in autumn to menorah candles at Hanukkah. Now many glow with Christmas lights while House remains unadorned, even as a new family moves in. On Christmas morning, there is lots of activity inside House as aunts, uncles, and cousins arrive, but no special lights. Instead, House listens as Amma and Abba say goodbye to young Huda. “We’re working today so our friends can celebrate with their families,” they explain. House enjoys the sounds and sights of Huda and her cousins playing all day. And that night, when Amma and Abba return, House listens as they promise her that in a few months, when Eid comes, they’ll celebrate together. “And we’ll put up all our lights.” House feels proud. “Even though I don’t have lights … I’m full of love and hope.” Detailed illustrations glowing with warmth form the sparkling backdrop to this openhearted, purposeful tale about a Muslim family.
