Book Description
for A Bear, a Fish, and a Fishy Wish by Daniel Bernstrom and Brandon James Scott
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A hungry brown bear with a “fishy wish” has its eyes—and stomach—set on a lone small pink and silver fish working its way upstream toward home. The fish is mid-jump up a waterfall when the bear succeeds in capturing it. “One fish / two fish / fish galore” follow, their eyes suspicious slits of annoyance and anger as they, too, leap up the waterfall, over the wide-eyed bear and its equally wide-eyed fishy captive. Both bear and fish topple into the water before washing up on the riverbank. “A flip / a flop / a gasp for air / a worried stare / a starving bear …” The brief rhyming text, humorous digital illustrations and mounting tension, and its tender resolution are all a delight in a story perfect for reading aloud.
