Book Descriptions
for A New Car for Pickle by Sylvie Wickstrom
From Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
There is a Busytown-esque quality to this easy graphic novel about Pickle, a pickle-colored, doglike creature with car problems. When his car breaks down, Pickle pushes it to Coco’s Garage and tells Coco he needs a new car. Pickle’s eyes grow wide with excitement when he sees a sporty one on the lot. He’s sure it’s the car for him and takes it for a test drive (“Vroooom”), only to get pulled over for speeding. A subdued Pickle goes back to Coco’s, where his eyes alight on a big car. But a test drive proves it’s a bit too big when Pickle runs into a stand at the farmer’s market. Back at Coco’s, Pickle is dazzled by a fancy car—it isn’t too big or sporty. The test drive confirms it for Pickle—this is the car he wants, until Coco tells him the cost (“a million dollars”). Coco also explains that he’s checked Pickle’s car, and all it needed is gas (!), tune-up, and a car wash for good measure. Uncluttered, easy-to-follow panels and speech bubbles, appealing animal characters, and plenty of silliness make for a winning reader with a subtle message.
